Coral and copper crucifix (Trapani XVIII) Important carved coral crucifix. Trapani late seventeenth century. Height 40cm including the wooden base in black ebony. Trapani corals from the 15th century to the 18th century are famous for their rarity. The origins of coral art are purely Sicilian, precisely from Trapani, and since the fourteenth century we notice the presence of many coral craftsmen active for long periods. We remember in particular the Ciotta family: sculptors who worked coral, ivory and hard stones. We also remember in 1600 the author of numerous works, including the large, small and varied crucifixes, by the master Vito Bova. Some of these works are kept in the "Pepoli" museum in Trapani.
